SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California could soon require judges to consider whether a parent affirms their child’s gender identity when making custody and visitation decisions under a bill that cleared the state Senate on Wednesday. The vote was split almost entirely along party lines, with Democrats arguing the legislation would help to protect the well-being of LGBTQ+ children whose parents are going through a divorce. Democratic Sen. Scott Wiener, who represents San Francisco, said the bill was a proactive measure.“This is about not having to get involved after a child has been beaten and had their arm broken, or after they’ve been kicked out,” Wiener said. “This is about trying to make sure that something terrible does not happen to them.”Every Republican in the state Senate voted against the bill, with state Sen. Kelly Seyarto, who represents Murrieta in Southern California, arguing that lawmakers were interfering too much with how parents choose to raise their children.“Insertin...

Sean Payton is out to fix the Broncos’ offense. That starts with a Russell Wilson rebound

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Sean Payton’s quest to restore the Denver Broncos’ long-lost offensive swagger in 2023 starts with resurrecting Russell Wilson’s career.Denver’s offense and its star quarterback plummeted to new depths last season under Nathaniel Hackett, who was fired after 15 games with the Broncos averaging a league-low 15.8 points per game and Wilson mired in his worst season as a pro. General manager George Paton insisted the coaching change wasn’t driven by the need “to turn around Russ,” who finished with a career-low 16 touchdown passes and a career-high 55 sacks. “It’s not just one player. It’s not whether Russ is fixable or not, but we do believe he is.”Payton is just the man to oversee Wilson’s rebound, said NBC “Sunday Night Football” analyst Cris Collinsworth.“Sean Payton’s one of the greatest coaches of all time,” Collinsworth said. “Of. All. Time. Do I think he’s going to fix Russell Wilson? I do...

Giants running back Saquon Barkley enters the season once again looking to prove his value

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 02:06:35 GMT

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — After not getting a long-term contract with the New York Giants and signing his $10 million franchise tag, star running back Saquon Barkley is once again out to prove himself. It’s the same approach, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 draft took after not getting a deal before last season. All he did was respond with a career-best 1,312 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns. He tied for the team lead with 57 catches. All it got him was a franchise tag after the season and his highly publicized contract talks got nowhere in a market that no longer favors running backs. He ended up signing for the franchise amount a day before the start of training camp, which he felt was a major disappointment.“All that’s in the past,” Barkley said after practice Wednesday, just four days before the Giants’ Sunday night opener against the Dallas Cowboys. “Like I said, once I made that mindset to come here, you’ve got to be mature about it. No hard feelings about...

DENVER (KDVR) — Tucked away near Empower Field is the small Jefferson Park neighborhood. It's a charming place and usually pretty busy, with Federal Boulevard on one side and the stadium on the other. A pretty cool place, FOX31 is told — except for all the traffic signs. Tiny home builder who owes $6M spent lavishly before bankruptcy: report Kris Williams, who owns a small business in the neighborhood, said she sees the temporary traffic signs all the time, long after events at Empower Field at Mile High are over.“And they are impeding sidewalks. They are impeding right of ways and also they are causing a lot of confusion,” Williams said. That can cause headaches for businesses and the people who live here. FOX31 found one-way signs, no-turn signs and do not enter signs, along with stacks of cones and temporary street posts. They were randomly bunched up in many different spots.Who's responsible for these traffic signs? The Denver Police Department said the signs belong to a private...

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The felony convictions of four former Navy officers in one of the worst bribery cases in the maritime branch’s history were vacated Wednesday due to questions about prosecutorial misconduct, the latest setback to the government’s yearslong efforts in going after dozens of military officials tied to a defense contractor nicknamed Fat Leonard.U.S. District Judge Janis Sammartino called the misconduct “outrageous” and agreed to allow the four men to plead guilty to a misdemeanor and pay a $100 fine each. The surprising turn in the case came at a sentencing hearing in federal court in San Diego.Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter Ko, who was brought on after the defendants were tried last year, admitted to “serious issues” with prosecutorial misconduct and asked the judge to vacate the officers’ felony convictions.
